The Past

Some of the great dogs we've been privileged to share our lives with over the years:

 We were fortunate early on to have our lives blessed with two once-in-a-lifetime dogs - Maggie and Drum.  Generations later, the unmistakable type and athleticism of Maggie and the intelligence and drive of Drum are still present in their descendents.  We know you can't recreate the past, but there will always be a part of them in the dogs we own and the ideals they represented.

  Drum was five years old when he came to us from Becky Bailie, to whom we are forever grateful.  At nine years of age he was still garnering Best of Breed wins. Drum won the Open Red Merle class at the 1994 USASA National Specialty.  He consistently passed on genetic soundness, a strong work ethic and outstanding ability.

Maggie was our foundation dam and exemplifies the physical type and mental soundness that we hold as ideal.  She was the premium canine athlete - you should have seen her jump for those Frisbees, zip over the flyball hurdles, and scale the A-frame in agility. Maggie won first place in the Open Red Tri Bitch class at the 1994 USASA National Specialty.  We lost her far too early due to complications from a herniated disc following an accident.

As a former therapy dog for the elderly, Kasey was a calm and gentle ambassador of the breed; yet she could also be a staunch protector of home and car.  She would grin at and wag her nub at visitors to our home, but the other dogs here knew and respected that she was the queen.  Kasey was a resilient dog of strong mind and stable temperament.

Spooner believed she was put in this world to love children.  I once left her at the starting line in agility only to find that when I looked back she had decided to leave the ring and go visit a couple of boys who were helping out at the trial.  A talker and a Frisbee fanatic, she was the self-appointed Chief Security Officer of the Garbage Gnome Patrol and according to our son Mitchell: "The bestest dog in the whole world."

1997-2011

 Abby qualified for the ASCA National Stockdog Finals in 1999 and 2000 with former owner Jeff Dasinger.

Abby was an honest dog who naturally worked very wide.  What I loved best about her was that I could open the gate to the pasture at the top of the hill, tell her to "get around", then walk down to the arena and wait for the sheep to come trotting down the hill and through the gate.  The less commands I gave her, the better.  She was the same in agility and liked it best if I just hung back twenty feet, shut up and leaned my shoulder to indicate directions to her.  Next to Jumpers runs in agility and cows, Abby loved her Frisbee best.  Her other talents included retrieving basketballs, soccer-style, uphill and serving as a pee-wee handling dog.

 Domino always gave her all, never forgetting she was part of a team.  She was focused and courageous, biddable and gentle with children.  One of her former occupations was visiting preschool and serving as a demo. dog.  She would very patiently allow each and every child to walk her up and down the hallway.  While waiting for her turn in agility, she was curled up and napping. But put her on the starting line and the switch would go on and her jet pack was fired up.

Ben was co-owned with Nita Taylor of Eaton, OH.  Obsessed with tennis balls, his aspiration was to become an active member of a flyball team.  He was also awesome on sheep - a hard worker, intense and a quick learner. We called him "Everybody's Dog" because of the easy switch he made from one handler to another, whether doing 4-H, obedience, working sheep or showing.  Ben had a rock solid temperament with a fabulous ON/OFF switch.  He  earned points and RWDs under Breeder Judges such as Shelly Hollen, Carol Ann Hartnagle, Sam Magazzine, Rick Gann (BOW/BOB), Sandy Cornwell and Lois Odom.

Rush was the social ambassador here and a true clown, not to forget an occasional escape artist - although he just wanted to come sit on the porch and wait at the front door. He also served as our daughter's 4-H dog, attending the State Fair in junior handling with her. Athletic, happy, outgoing and with the most striking mahogany colored coat, Rush was truly one of a kind.

    Jay naturally ran wide on stock like her mother. She was a calm worker who gently lifted the sheep out of the pen.  They never questioned her authority.  She loved everyone she met and was built to move tirelessly (as we discovered on those occasions when she felt the need to go to work and do laps around the arena and pastures).

Trim Q'd in 4 out of 4 runs at SEMASA's Memorial Day trial with class placements all the way.  Trim loved working ducks.  One day when I was out gardening, she kept rounding up the ducks, who were on bug patrol, and bringing them to me. On dark winter nights when I was deep in a book, Trim would cozy up in the recliner with me - my substitute house cat.
